Here is the official announcement of the Weihai Road 696 Art Studios event:

Happy Together- 25 artists present multi disciplinary works for two day event

Date: April 18-19, 1pm to 8pm daily

In the Summer of 2006 a small artists colony took over the abandoned premises of an old opium den, later turned into a factory, in downtown Shanghai. Now around 40 diverse practioners have built functioning workshops in the building. 696 Weihai Road has a very diverse mix of inhabitants, including painters, sculptors, dancers, singers, bands, film directors, photographers , actors, arts activists, journalists, fashion designers, professional travelers, an underwear designer, child arts specialists, a wedding photography team, a foreign martial arts master, an animation company, an outdoor clothing and gear shop, architects, and also a few experimental gallery spaces.
As the downtown location of the building is in Shanghai’s ‘golden area,’ just a few minutes away from the city’s top malls and hotels, developers have long been threatening to take over the building. The tenants have been keeping up a three year campaign to maintain Weihai 696’s function as a creative space, through individual and group actions. To celebrate the fact that the building has not yet been torn down or converted into a commercial development the building hosts an annual open door event, to showcase work, allow performers to show their work in public in a relaxed setting to friends and visitors, and this year should also see some documentary work and other experimental pieces. Due to the anarchic nature of the setting and the work in progress, and for other obvious reasons, not all can yet be revealed!
Currently around 25 of the workshops will present open doors, installations and around 5 musical performers have been slated in to play at various venues within the complex. A map will be provided to guests, and signs relating to the various events will be posted by the main gate, or chalked on the walls.
Refreshments should be provided at various locations throughout the events, and there are also numerous 24 hour stores nearby where visitors can purchase snacks and beverages.

2006年夏天,威海路的一片不起眼的弄堂厂房里,搬来了第一位和艺术工作有关的住户,后来陆续地很多来自世界各地的艺术工作者迁徙了进来,慢慢形 成了一个有意思的小村落,这片旧日厂房在这群创作者的精心改建和安排下,变成了这个中国最商业的都市里,少有的一个乌托邦。他们友好相处,相互鼓励。在这 个温暖的小环境里,在每个小方格子里,都有一个有关艺术的梦想在茁壮生长着,无论是来自什么国家,无论从事什么专业,他们都在这里找到了自由发展的乐土。

如果要列一个单子,那这单子上一定包含了所有能让人类感受到快乐的工作;能让人更接近幸福的生活方式:画家,雕塑家,舞蹈者,歌手,乐队,电影导 演,摄影师,话剧演员,艺术活动家,记者,画廊业者,服装设计师,职业旅行家,内衣设计师,婚纱摄影小组,外国武术大师等等,当然还有一些行踪诡秘的至今 没有暴露身份的神秘主义者。

不可思议的事情里往往也有平淡无奇的一面,生活因此才有趣。
这片地方的名字和它的门牌一样未加任何修辞:威海路696号,或者叫696。

因为地处上海最中心的寸金之地,696在都市商业大厦的阴影下,如同在走廊里四处游荡的那只著名的黑色野猫,从来不知道昨晚住的纸板箱,明天是否还 在原地。从第一天入住起,每个人都被告知了随时会被拆迁的命运。所有的梦想家最初是带着一丝惴惴不安地生活在这里,直到渐渐变得习惯于这样的命运,直到有 一天他们突然想起来,他们已经在这里不可思议地驻扎了三个年头了。这些年里,很多人因为很多不同的原因,搬来这里或者离开了这里。有时是陌生人因为靠近成 为了朋友,有时是朋友因分离而相忘于江湖,他们渐渐习惯了认识新面孔,忘却旧邻居,各自躲在自己的工作空间里很少聚会。但是他们还是习惯每年的某几天,把 门都打开,因为这已经成为了这短短三年里,696里唯一确定了不会改变的事情。

2009年开门的日子是4月18日- 4月19日。

那两天里所有的门都是敞开的,有多少性格各异的主人,就会有多少不同的待客方式。在联欢的日子里,喜欢喝酒聊天交朋友的人一定可以在这里找到你的知 己,欢迎购物的人可以在某些空间里,发现一些艺术家有趣的手工活儿,有纪念意义的小玩意儿;喜欢板着脸一句话也不说四处游荡的人,也可以在这里假装严肃很 久,因为有足够的地儿够你神游。

总之,愈是大家容易不开心的危机日子里,愈是不知道明年自家在哪儿的际遇,却愈是让这些家伙懂得了及时行乐的必要。所以,大家凑一起玩玩儿吧!

Laurent Friquet

stage候台BACK is proud to announce the future collaboration with French multi media & performance Artist Laurent Friquet. Laurent Friquet's latest performance "A Trip Around" will be shown at the Force de l'Art #02 at the Grand Palais in Paris, France this Spring. Friquets first appearance at stage候台BACK will be at the coming up 696 open door event in April 09. He presents one of his video works at the stage候台BACK video exhibit. A solo show is in its planning for the coming up fall.

In the work of Laurent Friquet a poetic builds up itself without accommodation where the object and the being are put on the same plan. His photos, films and performances hallucinated are sometimes ballads in the city, sometimes disturbing dance of a tightrope walker, or still the construction of a personal cosmos makes of flesh or sky.
The music, inspired or consisted, is an essential element in the elaboration of the device insidious and secret fictional.

A Trip Around, investigates the relation always rich in jolts of the relations man-woman. Not living simple in the words, but in the tense and ambiguous connections between both characters, as much as in the erotic air which they inhale. In this proposition we are in front of a total freedom of acts, sounds and images to arrive to a shape of fervent break, not without humor always.

‘Fragility Report’ is the third cycle of Rolf A. Kluenter’s Shanghai works that he created in this Chinese Mega-Metropolis during his resident-ship since 2000. This cycle presents a range of works that acquires the density of objects without losing the free form of inwardness that paint evokes. ‘Fragility Report’ gives an insight into Kluenter’s observation of urbanity as an awe-inspiring reality. These aspects of Kluenter’s aesthetics might bear strong reminiscences of scenes and atmospheres of 19th century Romanticism. In contrast, however, his recourses and references rather relate to the “Dynamics” of a mega-urban scenario than to the “Mighty” of Nature.

R A Suri (born: 1970, Montreal) is an autodidact artist/curator/critic/poet & writer.. He began as a freelance journalist in 1987 followed by independent investigations & research in socio-political experiments in film and theatre. As an artisan , artist & curator, has acted as an assistant director for Les Ateliers Graff- centre for contemporary printmaking(Montreal), Isart-independent centre for contemporary art (Montreal), artistic director for DDM Warehouse-centre for experimental art (Shanghai) where he spearheaded over 14 exhibitions & events from 2005-2006 with an axis on emergent artists from across S E Asia & in-situ creation. Independent projects since include artistic consultancy/direction for local and international figures in contemporary & experimental art within the mainland of China.
As a literary figure and critic/editor, he has acted as editor-in-chief for “Images: Revue Interculturelles” (Montreal), associate editor for “Ruptures: Literary Review of the Three Americas” (Montreal), the “Chinese Contemporary International Poetry Quarterly” (Chongqing), “Ling Du”-(Zero Writing) Literary Samizdat Journal (Shanghai), “Poetry Circle Quarterly” (Hong Kong) & “Sa Jiao” Literary Review (Shanghai). He was featured as a principle editor for the 2004 Anthology of New Chinese Poetry in Translation (Chongqing), a seminal project towards the promotion of new literature & poetry at an international scale. He has acted as an associate editor of “Yishushijie (Artworld) Magazine” since 2003. Since his arrival to Shanghai in 2001, he is the author of over 140 critical texts relating to contemporary art & performance published by both private and public press.
Regarding his own poetry, the seminal poet/performance artist of the Neo-Avant Garde movement, Julien Blaine cites…’a poetic of exquisite sensitivity…reminiscent of Giorno…with a profound sense of spirituality belonging to neither the Occident nor Orient” & the NYC based poet/video/performance artist Ellen Zweig…”a self-styled, ecstatic lyricist”.
His engagement in film and theatre brought him to work in concert as artistic director for the “Chinese and South East Asian Independent Film Festival “(Montreal), Pan Production Studio/Barrandov Studios (Prague), numerous documentary and television projects (BBC Channel 4) & cultural editor of Shanghai Television/Shanghai Broadcast Network. Contemporary Dance/Theatre works include his involvement in productions for “The Other Theatre” (Montreal), l’Agora de la Danse (Montreal) &“Zhu He Niao” (Shanghai). He has published extensively on the topics of Butoh, performance art & the evolution of physical theatre.
Current projects include acting as a literary consultant & editor for the forthcoming Pan-Asian
edition of “Doc(K)s- Review of New Literature” (Marseilles), an exploration on the emergence of new writing/visual experimentation in the Orient, the production of an independent documentary film & a volume of new poetry.

類風濕性關節炎蘇瑞(出生: 1970年,蒙特利爾)是一個autodidact藝術家/策展人/評論家/詩人& 作家..他開始作為一個自由撰稿人在1987年獨立之後, 調查與研究中的社會政治實驗電影和戲劇。同樣地 一個工匠,藝術家及策展人,擔任助理署長為法國製造 格拉夫中心當代版畫(蒙特利爾) , Isart獨立中心 當代藝術(蒙特利爾) ,藝術總監DDM的倉庫中心 實驗藝術(上海) ,他率先超過14展覽及活動由 2005-2006年的軸應急藝術家來自全國各地及東南亞地區的原位 創造。自獨立的項目包括藝術顧問/方向 當地和國際人士在當代與實驗藝術的 祖國大陸。

他參與的電影和戲劇的工作使他在演唱會的藝術總監的“中國和東南亞獨立電影節” (蒙特利爾) ,潘Production Studio中/ Barrandov工作室(布拉格) ,無數的紀錄片和電視項目(英國廣播公司第4頻道)及文化編輯上海電視台/上海廣播網絡。當代舞蹈團/劇院工程包括他參與製作的“其他劇場” (蒙特利爾) ,歐萊雅小組德拉薩舞(蒙特利爾) & “朱赫妮遨” (上海) 。他出版了廣泛的專題舞踏,表演藝術的演變與物理劇院舉行。
目前的項目包括作為文學顧問和編輯為即將舉行的泛亞洲
版的“文件(金)的S -審查新文學” (馬賽) ,探索,出現了新的寫作/視覺試驗在東方,製作一個獨立的紀錄片及大量的新詩。

THANK YOU!

Thanks to everybody who joined us last saturday for the Sylvie Tillmann candyfloss overboard opening. I am proud and grateful about the compliments I and my team have received that evening.

Tillmanns work could be described as "provocative" - to me it is an invitation into her thoughts and regards and a celebration to the difference of beauty. It was an extraordinary experience to have her personally at the opening. It created a moment that Shanghai hasn't seen yet, a new approach to individual creation and the ability to expose exactly that.

The show is on view till April 6th. Please come thrusday - sunday, 14h - 18h or by appointment.

謝謝大家參加了我們的上個禮拜六のSylvie Tillmann candyfloss overboard 開幕式。 我很驕傲也感謝大家給我和我的隊員門の道賀。

Tillmanns 做平可以說成 "provocative -惱火" -對我來說這是個帖讓我來了解他的想法而介也說是個歡騰對美麗。真的是一個很補課適宜の經驗能帶來他個人來參加在開幕式。它創造了一個時刻,上海還沒有看到尚未, 個新的路子對個人の創作。

Vorhang auf für Räuber Fotzenglotz

Hereinspaziert ins Varieté der Obsessionen. Hier fallen zuerst die Hüllen, dann die Konventionen. Freude, Lust und Schönheit außerhalb der Norm. Zeitlos wirken die Schwarzweis-Fotografien, wie vage Erinnerungen, ein Jahrhundert alt. Sie zeigen Menschen, die ihre tiefsten Neigungen lustvoll ergründen. Jene verbotenen Energiequellen in uns, die sich nicht scheren um Nutzbarkeit und Wohlverhalten. Ein skuriles Versteckspiel, sinnlich, selbstvergessen, beglückend. Jedes Bild ist ein Dokument der Selbstermächtigung. Fantastisch, ein utopisches Paradies.
Die Arbeiten ziehen ihre Kraft aus dem Spannungsfeld zwischen individueller Schönheit und ihrer gesellschaftlichen Norm. Sylvie Tillmann versteht den Körper als Projektionsfläche, auf ihr werden Werte und Sehnsüchte der Menschen sichtbar. Geboren werden wir blütenweiss und dokumentieren unser Leben buchstäblich auf der eigenen Haut. Der Körper ist zum Kulturphänomen geworden, modellierbar wie Knete.
Beunruhigend ist nur, dass unser Schönheitsideal heute industriell gefertigt wird und kommerziellen Interessen dient. Unsere ästhetische Erziehung haben Barbie, Ken und die Disney-Prinzessinnen übernommen. Sie liefern gleichzeitig die Blaupause für den eigenen Schönheitsanspruch. Vor und nach der Pubertät.
Wer bestimmt also über unser Schönheitsempfinden? Wer hat die Bilder entworfen, die wir nicht mehr aus dem Kopf bekommen? Tillmann befreit sich davon in ihrer Arbeit. Die Fotosession wird zur Therapiesitzung – für die Künstlerin, ihre Modelle und den Betrachter.
Mit Provokation hat es deshalb auch nichts zu tun, wenn Räuber Fotzenglotz freudvoll seiner Leidenschaft nachgeht. Ebenso wenig die Ani in Serie. Schluss mit der Sucht anderen zu gefallen. So entsteht Freude, Lust und Schönheit. Willkommen im Varieté der Obsessionen.
